Matt Williams San Diego Padres coach diagnosed with colon cancer and has been scheduled for surgery on Friday. The third-base coach’s manager Bob Melvin informed reporters about the same on Wednesday.
The third-base coach position will soon be filled by Mike Shildt former St. Louis coach Cardinals manager and senior adviser of Padres. The most anticipated season in franchise history begins on Thursday which is when Mike shall join the team in a home game against Colorado Rookie.
Coach Matt Williams who has been diagnosed with cancer three weeks ago spent almost 17 years with San Francisco Giants. He said “I don’t have any symptoms, I don’t have any issues, but at this point, it’s important that we get it out of there,” on Wednesday.
The initial scans have gone well and show that the cancer hasn’t spread and he says he will fight to get back as quickly as possible. Matt is all time Five star and has played 10 seasons with San Francisco, Cleveland, and Arizona. Out of this in 2001 Diamondbacks won the World series. He has also won four Gold Glove Awards and four Silver Slugger Awards.
Melvin Padres staff say that he has been with Matt on different teams and has known him for 35 years. He said that Williams is probably the toughest man ever in baseball he ever met and he shall beat the disease. Melvin added saying that it’s hard to see someone so close going through all this but he assures that he will do it.
