Emery Gainey, a long-time Gainesville resident with nearly 40 years of law enforcement experience, officially became the Alachua County Sheriff on Sunday. This appointment came about because of Clovis Watson’s departure, and Gainey will serve the remainder of Watson’s term, which spans over a year.
Before his official swearing-in, Gainey had been leading the sheriff’s office for a few weeks, following Watson’s resignation. His appointment to this prestigious role by Governor Ron DeSantis on September 7 marked a historic moment, as he became the first Republican to hold the sheriff’s position since Steve Oelrich in 2006.
Prior to this appointment, Gainey dedicated almost 25 years to the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office. Although he previously ran for sheriff in 2006 but lost to Sadie Darnell, his commitment to public service led him to work under three different administrations at the Florida Attorney General’s Office, eventually becoming chief of staff for Ashley Moody. Additionally, he served as sheriff of Marion County during Governor Rick Scott’s tenure.
It’s worth noting that Gainey is now one of six candidates vying for the sheriff’s seat in the upcoming 2024 election. With his extensive experience, background, and recent appointment by Governor DeSantis, he emerges as a strong contender in this significant electoral race.
