Capitol Hero Harry Dunn Takes a Stand in Congressional Run

Harry Dunn, hailed as an American hero for his bravery during the Capitol attack, is now stepping into politics. Dunn, a former Capitol police officer, vividly recounts the assault in a CNN op-ed, emphasizing its severity.

The assailants used improvised weapons, turning flagpoles into pikes and dismantling metal bike racks for bludgeons. Dunn, among the officers defending the Capitol, endured physical and verbal assaults, including racial epithets. Now, he’s running for Congress, driven by a commitment to country over self.

In his campaign launch video, Dunn emphasizes his duty as a Capitol police officer on January 6, prioritizing the oath to protect the Constitution and democracy. This stands in stark contrast to Trump’s passive response from the White House during the attack.

As the retiring Democrat John Sarbanes leaves the Third District’s representative seat, Dunn stands out among 15 primary candidates. Despite being a national figure post his moving testimony, Republicans, downplaying the insurrection, challenge Dunn’s hero status.

Dunn, alarmed by the potential threat to democracy, sees his congressional run as a means to hold Trump accountable. With an impending glide path to the Republican nomination, Trump’s influence remains concerning. Dunn, having served in the force for 15 years, stresses the urgency of safeguarding democracy.

“It’s no exaggeration to say we are one election away from the extinction of our democracy,” Dunn warns. He aims to utilize his congressional role to counter Trump’s influence and fight for the nation’s democratic values.

While people may hold varying opinions about Dunn, his dedication to protecting democracy is evident as he enters the realm of politics.
