Melissa Barrera says goodbye to her character Sam Carpenter in Scream 6, but she’s ready to move on to new projects.
Barrera, introduced in Scream 5, was seen as the new lead of the franchise, especially with Neve Campbell not returning for Scream 6. However, after two films, her time as Sam has come to an end. This was due to social media posts she made about the Israel-Hamas conflict.
Despite the abrupt departure, Barrera finds closure in Sam’s storyline in Scream 6. The movie sees Sam confront her dark past and even face a Ghostface mask resembling her father.

While fans might have hoped for a trilogy with Barrera at the helm, her contract was only for two movies. She acknowledges there might have been plans for a three-film arc, but she’s content with her time on the franchise.
“The ending of Scream 6 was great,” Barrera says. “Sure, fans might have wanted more, but I fulfilled my contract and I’m happy about that.”
She compares her situation to cancelled TV shows, stating it’s important to move on in the industry. Barrera is now looking forward to new roles and the challenges they bring.
“I did what I came to do in Scream,” she says. “It was always two movies for me, and that’s okay.”

The Scream exit wasn’t easy, and Barrera expresses gratitude for her supportive team, especially her publicists, who helped her navigate the situation.
“Having a good team is crucial,” she says. “They helped me stay positive during a difficult time.”
Next up for Barrera is a starring role in “Abigail” directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the duo behind Scream 5 and 6.
