Rising star Julia Garner has been cast in the lead role of “Weapons,” a New Line horror movie directed by Zach Cregger, the filmmaker behind the critically acclaimed “Barbarian.”
Production is slated to begin in Atlanta this May, with Garner starring alongside Josh Brolin. Details about the plot are shrouded in secrecy, but the script is described as a chilling, interconnected horror story with a sprawling narrative, reminiscent of Paul Thomas Anderson’s ensemble drama “Magnolia.”
This marks a reunion for the “Barbarian” team, with Cregger returning to produce alongside Roy Lee (Vertigo), J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules (BoulderLight Pictures), and Miri Yoon (Vertigo).
Garner’s impressive career trajectory continues to soar. Following her three Emmy wins for her role in the Netflix crime series “Ozark,” she has secured a string of high-profile projects. She’s currently in post-production for Paramount’s psychological thriller “Apartment 7A” and filming the Blumhouse/Universal monster movie “Wolf Man” opposite Christopher Abbott in New Zealand, directed by Leigh Whannell.

Adding to her busy schedule, Garner recently signed on to portray the Silver Surfer in Marvel’s upcoming “Fantastic Four” alongside Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach. Filming for “Fantastic Four” is expected to take place in London later this summer, following the completion of “Weapons.”
Garner’s breakout role came in the Netflix crime drama series “Ozark” (2017-2022). Her portrayal of Ruth Langmore, a cunning and determined young woman entangled in the dangerous world of the Byrdes, earned her widespread recognition. Garner’s nuanced performance resonated with audiences and critics alike, leading her to win three Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series and a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress.
