Acclaimed actress Noomi Rapace, known for her roles in “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” and “Prometheus,” will take on the role of Mother Teresa in a new film by Macedonian director Teona Strugar Mitevska.
Titled “Mother,” the biopic will focus on a crucial week in Mother Teresa’s life. The story follows her decision to leave the Loreto Entally convent in Kolkata, India, and establish her own religious order.
This film marks Mitevska’s first directed entirely in English. She expressed her enthusiasm for casting Rapace, highlighting the actress’ suitability for the role. Mitevska envisions Mother Teresa as a strong and determined figure, challenging the Catholic Church’s authority.

Mitevska, who grew up in Mother Teresa’s birthplace of North Macedonia, initially held a neutral view of the iconic figure. However, after creating a documentary about her life, Mitevska developed a deeper appreciation for Teresa’s work. She connected with Teresa on a personal level, recognizing a shared strength and resilience in the religious leader.
“Mother” is a collaborative effort between production companies from five countries: Macedonia, Belgium, Denmark, Netherlands, and Sweden. Global sales will be handled by Kinology.
