Ellen DeGeneres Announces Farewell Comedy Special on Netflix

Ellen DeGeneres is returning to stand-up comedy with a new Netflix special, her last, marking a comeback to the platform six years after her previous special, “Relatable.”

The special is scheduled to premiere later in 2024 and will coincide with a multi-city tour kicking off on June 19th in San Diego.

DeGeneres hinted in a statement that she will address the controversy surrounding her talk show’s ending: “Yes, I’m going to talk about it. Yes, this is my last special. Yes, Portia really is that pretty in real life.”

This most likely refers to the allegations of a toxic work environment on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” that led to its cancellation in 2022. The show, which ran for 19 seasons and won 63 Daytime Emmy Awards, faced accusations of bullying and a hostile work atmosphere by former employees.

DeGeneres, a comedic legend known for her stand-up career, hosting awards shows, and voicing Dory in Finding Nemo, has a long history of breaking barriers. Her character coming out on her sitcom “Ellen” in 1997 was a groundbreaking television moment.

While Netflix is excited to bring DeGeneres back for a new special, many are curious if she will sincerely address the workplace issues at her former show, rather than simply using them for comedic material.
