Actor Kevin Costner has cleared up the reason behind his departure from the hit show Yellowstone in 2023. There were initial reports of a feud with creator Taylor Sheridan, but Costner reveals a different story.
According to Costner, production delays were the main factor. Despite being ready to film, the show’s schedule kept getting pushed back, leading to frustrations. “I did it for five years,” Costner told the Today Show, “and I wanted to work more than once a year.” He recounted a period where production stalled for “well over a year,” prompting his decision to leave.
Costner expressed a desire to return under the “right circumstances,” emphasizing his dedication to the show. “I’ve supported that thing and I’ve loved it,” he said. “It’s been really important to me.”
Previous reports painted Costner as responsible for Yellowstone’s premature end, which he refutes. He even adjusted his schedule for his passion project, “Horizon – An American Saga,” to ensure he met his Yellowstone commitments. However, upon arrival for filming, Costner claims there was no script available, causing a breakdown in communication.
While the door seems open for a Yellowstone return, it appears Costner is waiting for a more reliable production schedule before stepping back into the role of John Dutton.
