Actress Leah Remini, known for her roles on shows like “Dancing with the Stars” and “The King of Queens,” has achieved a major accomplishment: earning a college degree at the age of 53.
Remini shared the news with fans on social media, revealing she embarked on this journey three years ago after only having an eighth-grade education. She also acknowledged spending 35 years in a “totalitarian cult,” a clear reference to the Church of Scientology, which she left over a decade ago.
The emotional post detailed the struggles Remini faced. Despite a successful acting career, she harbored a long-time desire for higher education. However, self-doubt and the “decades of brainwashing” she endured in Scientology held her back.
But Remini persevered. After three years of hard work, late nights, and moments of wanting to quit, she earned an Associate in Arts degree from New York University’s School of Professional Studies.
Remini’s achievement is particularly inspiring considering her character on “The King of Queens,” Carrie Heffernan, frequently grappled with the limitations of not having a college education. There were even storylines where Carrie’s lack of a degree caused insecurity, like when she felt out of place with a group of lawyers.
