Musas, the Afro Latina Girl Band making people “Vibe” with them!

Musas Afro-Latina Girl Band

The band Musas is Latina-American origin and is based in New York City. They are performing since they were very young and music is part of their lives since childhood they say. “We come from a family of musicians from both sides,” Keisha says. The band is formed by the siblings Keisha, Fiona, and Fiorella Sanchez. The pandemic is the real inspiration behind their forming a band. The lockdown brought a big question mark as to what to do now and so the Musas were born.

So, in the beginning, we were like ‘Let’s just make music because we love making music.’ Says Kiesha. ‘But then this shifted because we knew were doing something done before and we had to put our essence and cultural background into it,” They say.

Taking up the cue from the girl groups of the 90s and early 2000s like TLC, Xscape, SWV Musas are ready to bring their eclectic sound to the masses.

When asked about their inspirations each of them says different names like Alicia Keys, Nicki Minaj, Aretha Franklin, and many others. The group has Fiorella who is a singer, and songwriter and plays the bass while Fiona plays the keys and Kiesha is the producer. They have recently released the song “Patience” which is an Afrobeat and it is in collaboration with Columbian producer DJ CrisBoy, Nigerian producers Davidance and Young D, and Columbian violinist La Lulu. In their debut single, “Destino” the trio tackled the emerging genre of Ritmo exotico with help from Luis Edurdo Acustico.

They say they want to incorporate “Drill” as their next genre in the future. They also add saying they would want to collaborate with some upcoming singers like themselves. Apart from the upcoming artists they also have a list of well-known artists like Alicia Keys, and Chloe x Halle to reggaetoneros like Rauw Alejandro and Bad Bunny whom they look up to as their inspirations.

They are a well-rooted group of musical girls who wish to celebrate Afro-diasporic beauty. They think that it is in their blood and they should celebrate it if given the opportunity to. They also feel responsible towards their culture and want to contribute to it and highlight it along with their peers with respect for them. They also say that the people whom they have worked with are from their dad’s origin and they are very fresh and original.

“The more we develop in this industry, I think we will find our spot in it and make a sound for ourselves where people will recognize us.” Fiorella says.

Musas – Girls Band

“We are also a group of girls and not solo artists,” Fiona says. Being a group of girls trying to be part of the industry they also have to face challenges the same as other women have when coming into the industry. Many women in the industry have real potential and talent, yet according to Musas they are pulled back because of the people on the top who know how to make or break someone’s career in the industry. This makes it further difficult for upcoming girls to lay their footprints. Despite this, these girls say that if you have a vision and a goal it is possible to make name for yourself.

This is the inspiration that every girl should have and should not worry while fighting for what they want.
