Singer Jason Mraz recently opened up about his sexual identity on Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s podcast, “Dinner’s on Me.” Mraz, 47, explained why he waited until 2018 to publicly share his truth.

Mraz revealed he realized he wasn’t heterosexual later in life. He attributed his lack of exploration in high school to bullying and a desire to escape his hometown. Feeling insecure upon moving to New York City, he eventually found a supportive community in California.

Despite this newfound acceptance, Mraz grappled with the conservatism of his upbringing and fear of societal rejection. He acknowledged his parents’ support but admitted the lingering fear of being a joke, a common sentiment for LGBTQ+ people in the 1990s.

Mraz described himself as a “late bloomer” in terms of exploring his sexuality. Though he hasn’t found lasting love yet, he emphasized his personal growth and self-love, which he believes will enhance future relationships.

The singer has been married twice. His first marriage to Sheridan Edley lasted from 2000 to 2001. He then married Christina Carano in 2015, but they divorced eight years later. During their marriage, Mraz discussed his sexuality with Billboard, revealing past experiences with men and his wife’s concept of “two spirit,” an identity embracing love for both genders.

Following his divorce in 2023, Mraz spoke to GLAAD about the challenges of self-acceptance and navigating past relationships while embracing his newfound identity.
