Beloved Children’s Show “Reading Rainbow” Celebrated in New Documentary “Butterfly in the Sky”

AMC Theaters and Fifth Season are joining forces to release a documentary film titled “Butterfly in the Sky” about the iconic children’s television series “Reading Rainbow”.

The documentary, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2023, dives into the making of the show and the vision of its creators who believed in the power of television to ignite a love of reading in children. Directed by Bradford Thomason and Brett Whitcomb, the film also explores the experiences of LeVar Burton, the show’s beloved host, and the challenges encountered in fostering a love for reading through television.

“Butterfly in the Sky” will have a limited theatrical release starting on March 17th in select AMC theaters, followed by a wider release in New York and other cities. The film will be available digitally on VOD platforms (including iTunes and Amazon) starting April 30th. Fifth Season has acquired the film’s digital and international rights.

The directors, who grew up in Texas, credit “Reading Rainbow” for not only reflecting the diversity around them but also for introducing them to new worlds through LeVar Burton’s captivating storytelling. They believe the show is a “true unsung hero” of children’s programming and aim to honor its legacy by introducing it to a new generation.

“Reading Rainbow,” which aired for 23 years and spanned 26 seasons, featured appearances by prominent figures like Maya Angelou, Susan Sarandon, Jeff Bridges, and James Earl Jones.

LeVar Burton expresses his delight at the documentary, stating his hope that audiences will experience the same sense of warmth and joy he felt upon watching it.

To bring the story to life, the film utilizes archival footage and interviews with the show’s creators, guest stars like Whoopi Goldberg, and co-creator Twila Liggett.

XTR founder Bryn Mooser, who grew up watching “Reading Rainbow,” emphasizes the documentary’s significance in reminding everyone of the crucial role children’s literature plays in shaping young minds.

“Butterfly in the Sky” is presented by XTR and is a production of Sidestilt Films and Window Pictures. Roco Films will handle educational rights, making the film accessible to schools, libraries, and educators starting in April.
