Amidst the relentless fury of deadly wildfires claiming more than 55 lives, renowned White Lotus actress Connie Britton extends her heartfelt support to Maui.
In an emotional Instagram post on Thursday, Britton shared, “Maui. My heart is broken. Your loss is all of our loss. Your generous island and shores held us so lovingly when we shot @thewhitelotus during covid in 2020. And now we send massive love and strength for recovery during this unbearable time. You will always be a brilliant gleaming gem with a gorgeous heart and unbreakable spirit. #maui”
The White Lotus, an Emmy-winning HBO creation by Mike White, filmed its debut season on Maui’s second-largest island at the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Waileai amid the fall of 2020, during the height of the pandemic.
Producer Mike White shared the intricate safety measures taken during filming, emphasizing the meticulous testing and the self-contained “bubble” within the resort.
The wildfire’s devastation, fueled by potent winds from Hurricane Dora and exacerbated by parched conditions, ignited on Tuesday night, sweeping across the landscape. Not only causing hurricane-inflicted damage but also ravaging the historic town of Lahaina and extending its reach to places like Kula, the fires plunged over 11,000 individuals into darkness by Friday due to power outages.
Hawaii Governor Josh Green connected the tragedy to the looming specter of climate change during a recent press conference, underscoring its far-reaching impacts on the island’s delicate ecosystem.
As the fire’s death toll climbed to 55, Maui County Police Chief John Pelletier anticipates further escalation and implores residents to delay returning to Lahaina until all wildfire casualties are retrieved.
