On 26Th Feb,2023, Waymond Wang in ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ that is Mr. Ke Huy Quan, became the Second Asian male to win the Best Male Actor in a supporting role in either film or television one year after Lee Jung-jae from ‘Squid Game’ who won the best male actor in a drama series at the 29th Screen Actors Guild Awards at the Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles, California, U.S.
‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ won 4 awards at SAG Award function. Here’s the list:
- Ensemble Cast in a Motion Picture:“Everything Everywhere All at Once”
- Female Actor in a Leading Role in a Motion Picture: Michelle Yeoh in “Everything Everywhere All at Once”
- Male Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture: Ke Huy Quan in “Everything Everywhere All at Once”
- Female Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture: Jamie Lee Curtis in “Everything Everywhere All at Once”
Along with SAG, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” has also won 11 Oscar nominations.
Quan impressed everyone with his heartfelt speech while accepting the Statue. He said, “This is a really emotional moment for me. Recently I was told that if I was to win tonight, I would become the very first Asian actor to win in this category. When I heard this, I quickly realized that this moment no longer belongs to just me, it also belongs to everyone who has asked for change.”
He thanked his directors Mr. Daniel Dan Kwan and Mr. Daniel Scheinert. He also thanked his Co-stars, Caste and crew members.
He added, “And now tonight here we are, celebratingJames Hong, Michelle Yeoh, Stephanie Hsu, Hong ChauandHarry Shum Jr.,” he also said, “The landscape looks so different now than before. So, thank you so much all of you in this room and everyone who contributed to these changes. ”
Addressing his co-star Michelle Yeoh, he said, “I’m so glad that when we both started our careers in 1984 that one day we would meet on the big screen.”
And lastly not forgetting his fans and viewers he thanked by saying, “To all those at home that are watching, that are struggling and waiting to be seen, please keep on going because the spotlight will one day find you. Thank you for everyone rooting for me, I will be rooting for you.”
Prior to SAG Award function, in the last month Quan had already won the Golden Globe Award for his performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once.
Quan, the Vietnamese, 51 years old actor began his acting career in 1984 as a child artist in “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” and “The Goonies” in 1985. Back then he decided to stay on his back foot in his acting career since there weren’t enough opportunities for Asian Actors. But now his role in ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ was considered his first major film credit since the 90s.
In 95 years of Academy Awards only 5 Asian actors have won Oscar namely, Ben Kingsley (“Gandhi”), F. Murray Abraham (“Amadeus”), Miyoshi Umeki (“Sayonara”), Yuh-Jung Youn (“Minari”) and Haing S. Ngor (“The Killing Fields”).
