Is Jennifer Lawrence First Woman in the Lead of an Action movie?

Jennifer Lawrence faces a severe backlash after the conversation in the show “Actors on Actors” published by Variety on Wednesday where she claimed to be first women to lead in the action movie. Is Jennifer Lawrence first woman in the lead of an action movie? The answer is no and this she clarified herself later, on Thursday with Hollywood Reporter.

Jennifer Lawrence, 31 one of the top Hollywood actresses recently had a conversation on the show “Actors on Actors” show published by Variety studio. On Wednesday, she and Viola Davis were promoting her film ‘Causeway’.

“The Hunger Games” star faced a severe backlash after the show published on Wednesday went viral. She falsely claimed to be the first woman in the lead of an action movie in the 45-minute sit-down discussion.

Jennifer Lawrence Journey as an Actor

Jennifer Lawrence, 32 one of the top Hollywood actresses, has won Academy Award in 2011. She made her debut in 2008 film The Burning Plain. She has been starred in many hit movies some of which are Winter’s bone(2010), Mother, Passenger (2016), The Hunger Games: Catching fire (2013), X-Men: first class. The actress became prominent in 2012 as “Katniss Everdeen” from the movie “The Hunger Games” adapted from Suzanne Collins’s trilogy of books. Later she was also one of the highest-paid actresses in the world in 2015 and 2016 while she is one of the top 100 actresses.

What did Jennifer Lawrence Say?

While referring to the significance of the role in The Hunger Games she made her statement that “I remember when I was doing Hunger Games, nobody had ever put a woman in the lead of an action movie because it wouldn’t work — because we were told girls and boys can both identify with a male lead, but boys cannot identify with a female lead.”

She also further said that it makes her happy every time a movie comes out that breaks the stereotypes and proves that it is just a lie to keep certain people out of the movies.

Social Media Reacts on Jennifer’s Statement

After her comment, many took it to Twitter and trolled her saying that there are several other women who have starred as leads in action films. Her comment was instantly pounced on by critics on social media.

Franklin Leonard the producer and founder of The Black List a platform for film and TV writers also said on Twitter that is not true that no woman had ever been lead in an action movie before Jennifer Lawrence in The Hunger Games but Hollywood had and has a bias against women-driven movies because of the belief about who identifies with whom.

Jennifer Lawrence Clarification

The actress who starred with Davis in two films recently “The Woman King” and “Causeway” did not give any statement since the published show went viral and trolls made her trend for the remarks made by her, for a long time. But, now the actor has offered some clarification assuring that she didn’t mean to discredit anyone.

“That’s certainly not what I meant to say at all. I know that I am not the only woman who has ever led an action film”

Lawrence told to the Hollywood Reporter

“What I meant to emphasize was how good it feels,” she added, referring to the outdated belief that women are not suited to star in action movies. “And I meant that with Viola — to blow past these old myths that you hear about … about the chatter that you would hear around that kind of thing.”

“But it was my blunder and it came out wrong,” she concluded. “I had nerves talking to a living legend.”

As much as we all feel disregard for other actresses who have been lead women in action films, the fact that the bias still exists in Hollywood or in the industry cannot be washed out only because of some facts stated wrongfully by the actress.

Other Female Lead Actors in Action Movies are:

  • Sigourney Weaver in the “Alien”
  • Angelina Jolie in “Salt” and “Tomb Raider”
  • Uma Thurman in “Kill Bill: Volume 1” and “Kill Bill: Volume 2”
  • Michelle Yeoh in “Supercop”, “Magnificent Warriors” and “Yes, Madam!”
