Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio, renowned for their roles in the Karate Kid movies, are all set to bring back the iconic characters in Sony Pictures’ latest addition to the legendary martial arts franchise. This announcement comes as a delightful surprise for fans who have cherished the original series for decades.
The untitled feature, directed by Jonathan Entwistle, known for his acclaimed teen dramas such as “I’m Not Okay with This” and “The End of the F****** World,” aims to blend and extend the mythology of the original franchise, offering a fresh perspective on the beloved characters.
A global search has been initiated to find a Chinese actor for the lead role, with Chan and Macchio kicking things off in an introductory video. The script, penned by Rob Lieber, promises a plot hidden in the back of the dojo.
While details about the storyline remain guarded, it is known that the latest iteration will shift the narrative to the East Coast, focusing on a teen from China who discovers strength and direction through martial arts under the guidance of a tough but wise mentor.
Produced by Karen Rosenfelt, Sony has set a release date of December 13, 2024, with a spring shoot being considered. The original Karate Kid movie, launched in 1984, became an unexpected hit, spawning three sequels and a resurgence in recent years with the success of Cobra Kai.
