Fans excited to see a Mary Jane Watson reunion with Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man in “Spider-Man: No Way Home” were left disappointed. In a recent interview, Kirsten Dunst revealed she wasn’t approached to reprise her role despite Maguire’s return.
Dunst expressed openness to revisiting the characters, though. She envisions a reunion with Maguire outside the typical superhero movie format, perhaps something “indie” with a similar vibe to the movie “Chronicle.”
In the Sam Raimi-directed “Spider-Man” trilogy, Mary Jane was Peter Parker’s childhood sweetheart and love interest. While her absence didn’t affect the plot of “No Way Home,” some fans believe it missed an opportunity to showcase the evolution of Peter Parker’s relationships across different Spider-Man iterations.
Particularly interesting would have been seeing the dynamic between Maguire and Dunst’s well-established couple compared to the younger romance between Tom Holland’s Spider-Man and Zendaya’s MJ.
Despite not being included, Dunst assures there’s no hard feelings regarding the decision.
