An upcoming biopic about Michael Jackson is sparking controversy even before its release. The central issue? How the film will handle the longstanding allegations of child sexual abuse against the pop legend.
Director Antoine Fuqua previously promised an “unbiased” portrayal of Jackson’s life. However, Dan Reed, director of the 2019 documentary “Leaving Neverland” which focused on the abuse claims, disagrees.
Reed accuses the biopic of being a “complete whitewash” that downplays the seriousness of the accusations. He claims the film “contains complete lies” and avoids showing Jackson alone with children, despite documented instances.
Reed’s criticism stems from his own in-depth exploration of the allegations in “Leaving Neverland.” The documentary featured Wade Robson and James Safechuck, who allege abuse by Jackson at his Neverland Ranch during the late 80s and 90s. Their claims are part of an ongoing lawsuit against Jackson’s estate.
“Leaving Neverland” received critical acclaim, but audience reaction was divided. While some praised it for exposing Jackson’s alleged wrongdoing, others condemned it for attacking a deceased person who couldn’t defend himself.

Reed isn’t alone in his concerns. Reports suggest the biopic aims to “convince” viewers of Jackson’s innocence. Fuqua refutes this, stating his intent to create a nuanced portrayal that “humanizes” but doesn’t gloss over the complexities of Jackson’s life.
The biopic, titled “Michael,” is scheduled to hit theaters on April 18, 2025.
