Action star Karen Gillan, known for her roles in “Doctor Who” and “Guardians of the Galaxy”, is setting her sights on more serious characters. While promoting her new psychological thriller “Sleeping Dogs” alongside Russell Crowe, Gillan expressed a desire to explore dramatic acting.
“I’m open to everything,” Gillan said, “but I have been doing a lot of comedy and genre films lately. I wanted to challenge myself dramatically.”
In “Sleeping Dogs,” Gillan portrays Laura Baine, a complex and enigmatic researcher. Gillan described the character as “performative,” suggesting Laura might be putting on an intellectual facade.

“I played around with the idea that she observes and imitates people she considers sophisticated,” Gillan explained. “It was fun to research her mannerisms through YouTube videos.”
Despite her desire for dramatic roles, Gillan remains enthusiastic about returning to the “Jumanji” franchise. She acknowledged scheduling challenges but expressed hope for a future sequel. “We all love making those movies,” Gillan said.
