Matthew Vaughn’s “Argylle,” featuring an A-list cast and $200 million budget, failed to impress moviegoers or critics in its opening weekend.

The spy thriller, starring Henry Cavill, Sam Rockwell, Dua Lipa, and others, earned a meager $18 million domestically and $35 million globally, falling far short of its hefty price tag. Critics were lukewarm, with a 34% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a C+ CinemaScore.

This underwhelming performance follows similar struggles for Apple’s previous big-budget films, “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Napoleon.” Questions are arising about how long Apple will sustain financing movies that bomb at the box office.

However, Apple might find solace in streaming revenue when “Argylle” hits their platform. Additionally, the film’s premise, based on a book with mysterious origins (even falsely linked to Taylor Swift!), might intrigue viewers later.

While “Argylle” may not be an instant hit, its unique story and star power could still draw attention on streaming, offering Apple a different kind of return on investment.
