Bill Gates Says Since 1980 Chat GPT is the Most Advanced Technology

  • Bill Gates’ blog “The Age of AI has begun” signifies the importance of the newest technology Open AI’s Chat GPT as the most advanced technology since the 1980s.
  • Gates says that the Graphical User Interface (GUI) in the 1980s was one of such technological advances of all times which has now been surpassed by Open AI’s GPT.

“The Age of AI begun” explains Bill Gates’s point of view on AI technology:

Bill Gates on Tuesday published a blog on GatesNotes regarding Open AI and his viewpoints on the newest and most advanced introduction to the technology in the world.

The blog published by the name “The Age of AI has begun” talks about Open AI’s GPT and Gates explained its importance in coming years. He says it is the most advanced and revolutionary model of technology after the ‘Graphical User Interface’ in the blog so published on March 21st.

Talking about it in the blog he spoke about how he and Charles Simonyi tried and tested GUI in the 1980s which was the reason Charles joined Microsoft and Windows became the backbone of the Microsoft for next 15 years.

The GUI was then taken by Gates and Windows was based on it which created Juggernaut which was the software that replaced old command line computers.

The blog talks about how Gates gave the makers of OpenAI a challenge to train artificial intelligence to pass an Advanced Placement biology exam which is not an ordinary task in mid-2022. The AI team and Gates sat together for the meeting and Bill Gates says that they made steady progress since 2016 when they first met.

The test had 60 multiple-choice questions and 59 of them were correctly answered by the AI. He adds saying that he knew that he had seen something extraordinary.

“The whole experience was stunning,” Gates wrote. “I knew I had just seen the most important advance in technology since the graphical user interface.”

“The development of AI is as fundamental as the creation of the microprocessor, the personal computer, the Internet, and the mobile phone. It will change the way people work, learn, travel, get health care, and communicate with each other. Entire industries will reorient around it. Businesses will distinguish themselves by how well they use it,” he continued.

In the later part of the blog Gates talks about how this technology can reduce inequity and points out that the Government and philanthropy shall play deciding role in deciding whether it contributes to inequity or reduces it.

Bill Gates further agrees with the former CEO Eric Schmidt of Google and Amazon’s former CEO Jeff Bezos who predicted that data-based machine learning can change industries.

Open AI which developed GPT has ties with Gates and Microsoft which has also invested $10 billion in the startup. OpenAI also sells some software through Azure cloud services of Microsoft.

In the end, Bill Gates talks about how OpenAI can help solve problems that the Gates Foundation works on. He also explained how it can be used to help children learn maths and get advanced with it, especially for those students who are Black Latino, and lower income group, students.

He also highlighted that climate change is one of the issues of the era and that the people suffering from it are the ones who haven’t contributed to the issue. This can be solved with the help of OpenAI according to Gates.
