Kansas City is witnessing a concerning surge in COVID-19 hospitalizations, prompting experts to consider the possibility of a new wave of the virus in the area.
As of the latest data collection, the University of Kansas Health System had 14 COVID-19 patients, a number consistent with the previous week. St. Luke’s Health System was treating 23 patients, while Liberty Hospital had four and Children’s Mercy Hospital had two COVID-19 patients.
Although the current numbers are lower than previous pandemic peaks, they mark a notable uptick from the single-digit patient counts seen earlier in the summer.
The increase in COVID-19 inpatients and testing has been observed across various healthcare facilities. However, it differs from previous surges as it involves a steady flow of admissions and discharges rather than sudden spikes.

While it’s challenging to determine the exact trend in COVID-19 infections due to home testing and relaxed data reporting, data reported to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicates an increase in COVID-19 hospital admissions in both Missouri and Kansas.
Missouri and Kansas have witnessed a significant rise in hospitalizations in a short period. Missouri reported 282 COVID-19 hospital admissions to the CDC during the last week of August, compared to 75 hospitalizations in early July. Kansas saw its hospitalization numbers nearly double within one week in August, jumping from 57 to 108.
The situation is evolving, so staying informed and having a plan are crucial during these times.
