The FDA’s recent approval of abortion pills in the U.S. was challenged by anti-abortion groups and some other organizations. Lawsuit Filed to Reverse Approval of Abortion Pills Mifepristone and Misoprostol by four pro-life medical groups and three doctors.
American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine accuse FDA did not have the authority to approve the drug back in 2000 as there was no good scientific evidence supporting it.
The requirement for the prescription of medication for abortion has also been removed making it more accessible.
Biden has also executed an order “to protect and expand access to abortion care, including access to medication that the FDA approved as safe and effective over twenty years ago.”
Many companies and medical facility providers have even delivered the medication over a text or phone call during the pandemic through the mail. This increased emergencies due to abortion pill consumption at times making it difficult to control the death caused because of these medications. Nearly 54% of the women went through severe medical conditions or sometimes even death due to the wrongful use of the medicine.
There has been substantial evidence that chemical abortions cause more complications than surgical abortions the lawsuit says.
The anti-abortion groups emphasize the fact that the medications had been approved more than 2 decades ago, in defense of which FDA spokesperson said “more than 20 years ago based on a thorough and comprehensive review of the scientific evidence presented and determined that it was safe and effective for its indicated use — medical termination of early pregnancy.”
“Despite comprehensive data from both the United States and Europe on higher rates of complications and a 500% increase in the rate of abortion pill-related emergency room visits, the FDA until now has remained asleep at the switch,” accuses Charlotte Lozier president Chuck Donovan “I am grateful for ADF’s leadership in challenging the FDA on their profoundly anti-woman and anti-family handling of mifepristone.”
The FDA said there have been reports of 26 deaths of women associated with mifepristone as of June 30, 2021, including two cases of ectopic pregnancy resulting in death and several cases of sepsis, or severe systemic infection.
Despite those concerns, the popularity of medication abortion, which typically costs less than surgical procedures, has surged in recent years. In 2020, the pills accounted for 54% of all abortions, exceeding surgical abortions for the first time, according to the Guttmacher Institute.
The ADF and the FDA both make their point very clear and are trying to emphasize health and safety. FDA though claims to have checked through the evidence cannot justify the emergencies and ill effects of the medicines on women and girls’ bodies at large.
The study says that the medications made available and easily accessible create hormonal changes in a woman’s body and the levels of progesterone hormones increase. This makes it complicated for her future well-being.
