In yet another setback for summer travelers, major airports in the Northeast region of the United States issued warnings of significant flight delays and cancellations. As storms swept across the area, all flights serving the major airports around New York City and Boston faced ground stops starting at 1 p.m.
The adverse weather conditions led to over 1,450 flight cancellations nationwide, causing frustration and inconvenience for travelers.
LaGuardia Airport in Queens also experienced a ground stop due to thunderstorms, as announced by the FAA. The airport advised passengers to check with their airlines before heading to the airport, considering the heavy rain and fog conditions.
Boston Logan International Airport implemented a ground stop due to thunderstorms, as confirmed by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
John F. Kennedy International Airport also faced a ground stop. In an earlier Twitter update, the airport reported delays and cancellations due to weather conditions. Travelers were advised to contact their respective airlines to obtain the latest flight status before heading to the airport.
New Jersey’s Newark Liberty International Airport was similarly impacted by weather conditions, resulting in flight disruptions and a ground stop, according to the airport’s Twitter account. The FAA confirmed that Newark is currently under a ground delay.

JetBlue, with hubs in Boston and New York, faced significant disruptions, canceling more than 25% of its operations by Sunday evening, along with over 450 delays.
Based on statistics from aviation analytics firm Cirium and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, it is estimated that over 1 million passengers were affected by the 8,000 canceled flights across the industry.
