AMD has taken the wraps off its groundbreaking laptop processor equipped with 3D V-Cache technology. This new innovation allows AMD to stack additional cache on top of the CPU, boosting overall performance. Initially featured in desktop processors, the 3D V-Cache is now making its way to laptops.
With this approach, AMD successfully incorporates an extra 64MB of L3 cache into the Ryzen 9 7945X3D, resulting in an impressive total of 144MB. The primary advantage of this expanded cache is the significant reduction in cache misses. When the system fails to find required information in the cache, it has to retrieve data from system memory, causing processes to take up to ten times longer to execute, as per AMD’s estimates. The implementation of 3D V-Cache promises to enhance frame rates for gaming enthusiasts.
By adopting a vertical arrangement instead of adding more cache to the traditional 2D plane of the CPU, AMD achieves increased cache capacity without enlarging the chip’s physical dimensions. Essentially, this means extracting more performance from the CPU without impacting the horizontal space it occupies on the motherboard.
