Okogie emigrated with his family to the United States when he was three years old and the family settled in Snellville, Georgia.

Okogie grew alongside his siblings, namely Evaristus, Nathaniel, Rachael, and Emmanuel. Josh is the fourth child in the family.

Okogie joined Shiloh High School for his schooling and his older brother, Nathaniel, was a soccer player at Brewton-Parker College.

As a freshman at Georgia Tech, Okogie averaged 16.1 points 5.4 rebounds per game and was named to the ACC All-Freshman Team.

On June 21, 2018, the Minnesota Timberwolves drafted Okogie with the 20th overall pick in the 2018 NBA draft.

After Jimmy was traded from Minnesota in November, Okogie entered the starting lineup, averaging nearly 22 minutes a game on the season.
