The criminal charges were filed by the Orange County District Attorney in southern California in May 2020.

In August 2020, Roiland was arrested but later released on $50,000 bond. In October 2020, he chose not to plead guilty.

The case is related to an incident involving Roiland's girlfriend, he could face punishment up to 7 years in jail if found guilty.

Roiland was accused of domestic violence, corporal injury and fraud resulting in traumatic condition of the woman.
