Walter Mirisch is no more

Oscar-winning producer Walter Mirisch oversaw such masterpieces as "Some Like It Hot," "West Side Story," and "In the Heart of the Night."

According to a statement from the academy's CEO, Bill Kramer and president, Janet Yang, Mirisch died on Friday in Los Angeles.

"Walter was a great visionary, both as a producer and as an industry leader," the academy's CEO and president stated.

Mirisch won the Academy Award for Best Picture for "In the Heat of the Night" in 1967, and his company is still in business today.

Mirisch's brothers also produced "The Apartment" and "West Side Story," both Oscar wins for best film.

He was president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences from 1973 to 1977, eight years before the first Academy Awards ceremony.
