813,000 Students Now Don’t Need to Pay Education Loan Thanks to President Joe Biden

The White House announced ground-breaking news on Tuesday that provided over 813,000 borrowers with relief. They will receive a personal email from President Joe Biden congratulating them on having their student loans forgiven. This historic decision is the result of the Education Department’s painstaking account adjustment, which determined which individuals had made the required number of qualifying payments on their repayment plan.

Ongoing Relief and Presidential Commendation:

According to a White House official, the continuous relief is a reaction to the poor credit that many borrowers on income-driven repayment plans were given. With the promise of forgiveness after 20 or 25 years, these plans seek to modify payments based on income. President Biden’s email will express, “Congratulations — your student loan has been forgiven because of actions my Administration took to make sure you receive the relief you earned and deserve.”

Addressing Past Failures:

The email highlights past inadequacies of the student loan program, recognizing mistakes and administrative missteps that prevented millions of people from receiving the assistance they were entitled to. President Biden emphasizes his commitment to rectifying these issues, expressing pride in his Administration’s delivery on that promise.

Increasing Debt Relief Momentum:

Over the past months, a growing number of borrowers have experienced debt relief through the Education Department’s adjustments. In October alone, an additional 125,000 borrowers had $9 billion in debt wiped out. This relief extends beyond income-driven repayment adjustments, also encompassing public service loan forgiveness.

Challenges in the Wake of Resumed Payments:

The relief comes at a challenging time as federal student-loan payments resumed in October after a three-year pause. Borrowers faced difficulties, including inaccurate billing and communication issues with their servicer, during the transition back into repayment.

Department’s Accountability Measures:

The Education Department, committed to holding servicers accountable, recently withheld pay from servicer MOHELA for failing to send billing statements on time to millions of borrowers. Amid this, the department is crafting a new, more narrowly focused plan for student-loan forgiveness after the Supreme Court’s rejection of Biden’s initial broad relief attempt.

Borrowers’ Testimonials:

Despite repayment challenges and uncertainty, some borrowers express gratitude for the significant relief provided by the Education Department. George Tucker, a 63-year-old borrower, shared that this financial reprieve allows him to support his family, emphasizing its substantial impact on his life.
