In statements shared on Instagram, the couple revealed that the decision came after numerous meaningful and difficult conversations. They have already signed a legal separation agreement, according to the prime minister’s office.
In their joint statement on Instagram, they affirmed their enduring love and respect for each other and the family they have built together. Despite the separation, they intend to remain a close-knit family, prioritizing the well-being of their children.
Trudeau, the 51-year-old son of one of Canada’s renowned politicians, took office in 2015. His wife, Sophie Trudeau, a former model and TV host, added a touch of star power to the prime minister’s office. The couple, who tied the knot in 2005, were featured in Vogue magazine.

Both Justin Trudeau and Sophie Gregoire knew each other since childhood, as she was a classmate of his youngest brother, Michel. They reconnected as adults while co-hosting a 2003 charity gala.
Together, they have three children: Xavier (15 years old), Ella-Grace (14 years old), and Hadrien (9 years old).
The couple’s office emphasized the importance of maintaining a safe, loving, and collaborative environment for their children. They will spend time together during vacations, starting next week.
Justin Trudeau is the second Canadian prime minister to announce a separation while in office. His parents, Pierre Trudeau and Margaret Trudeau, went through a similar situation in 1977, with their marriage ending in 1984 during Pierre’s last year as prime minister.
