The candidate of the Democratic party Raphael Warnock wins Run-off Elections in Georgia Democrats to run the upper chamber of congress by 51-49.
Mr. Herschel Walker another candidate against Warnock who was backed by former president Donald trump has joined the string of defeats endorsed by Trump who is seeking nomination from Republicans for the presidential elections 2024.
During the campaign of both Mr. Walker and Warnock, they were both hit by allegations against each other’s character.
The 53-year-old southern Baptist preacher at the Atlanta church once led by civil rights leader Martin Luther King had argued that the contest was about competence and character.
During the campaign, Mr. Walker’s voters were affected by claims about having paid for the abortion of his 2 former girlfriends. He denied the claim and also acknowledged during the campaign that he was a father of 3 children out of wedlock, despite having long railed against absentee fathers.
On the other hand, Mr. Warnock who became the first black senator in the Deep South state when he first won his seat in January 2021 had said of his challenger: “My opponent is not a serious person,”
Republicans then attacked Warnock by reminding voters about the allegations by his ex-wife that he once ran over her foot in a car during a domestic dispute.
Republicans along with the defeat of Mr. Walker have lost the last opportunity to flip the senate seat after their defeats in midterm Senate contenders in New Hampshire, Nevada, Arizona, and Pennsylvania. Only the other Trump-backed candidates who won were in Ohio, Wisconsin, and North Carolina.
The party underperformed expectations last month by winning only a slender majority in the US House of Representatives, Congress’ lower chamber.
In Georgia 1.9 million cast votes early or by postal ballots. After the voting closed election official Gabriel Sterling said it was a record turnout across the board.
The victory suggests that it will be slightly easier for Mr. Biden to appoint judges and members of his administration even though most legislation will need Republican support.
The last month’s midterm elections were left undecided. Because no candidate passed 50% of the vote in November, the contest had to be settled by a run-off.
If in Georgia Democrats had lost (50-50) the Senate would have depended on US Vice President Kamala Harris’ tie breaking vote.
