- Senator Torrey Westrom injured in snowmobile crash and hospitalized following upper back pain
- According to officials, accident happened on Sunday in western Minnesota while a passenger with a 13-year-old boy driving
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said that Senator Torrey Westrom was hurt in an accident which occurred at around 3 p.m. on the north end of Lake Ida north of Alexandria.
According to reports, the snowmobile accidentally struck a packed snowdrift, the impact of which threw Sen. Westrom off the machine. He was found by deputies about 200 yards from the shoreline.
The “ice chunk” which caused the accident was left over from the fish house. This was informed by the GOP caucus spokeswoman Rachel Aplikowski.
In the mishap the teenager was not hurt but Republican Torrey Westrom was taken by emergency responders to nearby Alomere Hospital after he complained of upper back pain.
He is the first known blind person to be elected to the Minnesota Legislature. Westrom has served on several legislative commissions, including the Rural Health Care Advisory Task Force, the Secretary of State’s voting equipment task force, and the Minnesota Legislative Audit Commission.
