  • The US officials have asked TikTok owners to sell their stakes or face the consequences.

Federal Agencies Given 30 Days to Remove TikTok App

TikTok is not allowed on White House devices. The White House says,  all executive agencies and their contractors must remove TikTok or any other app from its parent company, ByteDance which is a Chinese company.

Federal agencies need to remove TikTok from all the government issued devices within a 30 days, according to the guidance memorandum from the office of budget and management, the White House stated.

“The Biden – Harris administration has invested heavily in defending our nation’s digital infrastructure and curbing foreign adversaries’ access to Americans’ data,” said Chris Derusha, the federal chief information security officer. “This guidance is part of the administration’s ongoing commitment to securing our digital infrastructure and protecting the American people’s security and privacy”.

TikTok spokesperson Shanahan said “The best way to address concerns about national security is with the transparent, U.S. based protection of U.S. user data and systems, with robust third – party monitoring, vetting, and verification, which we are already implementing”.

Why The Government Wants to Ban TIKTOK?

The company that owns the TikTok is a Chinese company, ByteDance. More than 2 billion people use TikTok in U.S. and it has been downloaded more than 130 million times. There are concerns that the Chinese – owned video app could have negative national security implications and this app could be used to gather the information about Americans’ and to gain access to users private data which could lead to the spread of misinformation.

In February, 2023 Canadian government and European Council banned the TikTok and more recently, certain universities and states has been banned TikTok.
