Russell Wilson, released by the Denver Broncos this week, took to social media to thank various team members, excluding the coach and general manager. He also expressed excitement for the next chapter in his career.
The official release, scheduled for March 13th, follows the Broncos’ announcement on Monday. Wilson, a veteran quarterback, is expected to attract interest from numerous teams, impacting both the draft and free agency.
“The Denver community welcomed me and my family with open arms,” Wilson wrote, expressing his fondness for the city and the bonds he formed during his two-year stint.
This move incurs a significant financial cost for Denver, who will be responsible for $85 million in dead money over the next two years – money allocated to Wilson’s salary that cannot be used for other players.

Wilson’s new team will likely offer a reduced contract compared to his previous one, which was worth $140 million over four years.
Several teams, including the Pittsburgh Steelers, Atlanta Falcons, and New England Patriots, are potentially seeking a quarterback this offseason and could be interested in Wilson.
“Challenges are temporary, but resilience is enduring,” Wilson wrote, expressing optimism about the future. “I’m excited for what’s next.”
Starting March 13th, Wilson is free to sign with any team. Though the Broncos will still pay his guaranteed $39 million salary for 2024, they can deduct any amount he receives from a new contract.
