The Denver Broncos signed safety Brandon Jones this offseason to replace veteran Justin Simmons. This move brought Jones back together with several former college teammates, creating a strong Texas Longhorns presence on the Broncos’ defense.
Jones consulted his fellow Longhorns safeties P.J. Locke and Caden Sterns before signing with Denver. “[I was] picking their brains and seeing what kind of scheme they run,” Jones said about talking to his former teammates.
The reunion extends beyond the safeties. Wide receiver Lil’Jordan Humphrey and defensive lineman Malcolm Roach, also former Longhorns, are on the Broncos’ roster. Jones says the group brings a “college-type of vibe” to the team.
Jones and Roach, who have been teammates since 2016, say their bond remains strong. “Malcolm has honestly been the same since we were freshmen in college,” Jones said. “He’s a vocal leader who holds everyone accountable.”
With five Longhorns on the team, including four on defense, the Denver Broncos will have a distinct Texas flavor this season.
