Iowa secured their spot in the Women’s NCAA Tournament Final Four after a thrilling 94-87 victory over LSU on Monday. Leading the charge for the Hawkeyes was National Player of the Year Caitlin Clark, who poured in a game-high 41 points.
Clark’s scoring barrage included nine three-pointers, showcasing her sharp shooting throughout the contest. The win avenged last year’s championship defeat to the Tigers, who were led by 2023’s Most Outstanding Player Angel Reese. Despite a valiant effort with a 17-point, 20-rebound performance, Reese couldn’t prevent LSU from falling short.
The Hawkeyes started strong with Clark sinking the opening basket. However, LSU countered with a surge, taking a lead into the second quarter. Iowa refused to back down, battling back to tie the game at halftime.
The third quarter belonged to Clark. She exploded for 22 points, including three triples in a row, to give Iowa a commanding lead they wouldn’t relinquish. The Tigers fought valiantly in the final ten minutes but couldn’t overcome the deficit.
Clark’s brilliance extended beyond scoring. She dished out 12 assists, showcasing her well-rounded game.
Up next for Iowa is a matchup against the powerhouse UConn Huskies in the national semifinals on Friday. The Huskies also secured their Final Four berth with an 80-73 win over USC. Paige Bueckers led the way for UConn with a 28-point, 10-rebound performance.
The first semifinal between South Carolina and North Carolina State will tip off at 7 PM EDT, followed by Iowa and UConn at 9 PM EDT. Both games will be broadcasted on ESPN.
