A former basketball standout at Iowa State University, Jeremiah Williams has made a startling admission by pleading guilty to underage gambling. This marks a significant turn of events in the ongoing investigation into sports betting among student-athletes in the state.

In a surprising twist, Williams becomes the tenth student-athlete from either Iowa State or the University of Iowa to acknowledge their involvement in this case. Originally facing charges of tampering with records, a charge that falls under the category of an aggravated misdemeanor, Williams opted for a guilty plea that resulted in reduced charges to a simple misdemeanor. This lesser charge comes with a scheduled fine of $645, as defined by Iowa law. Notably, other athletes implicated in the investigation have also faced tampering with records charges, and those who have pleaded guilty have seen these charges downgraded to underage gambling offenses.

In his candid admission, Williams revealed that he placed bets while still underage, using someone else’s FanDuel account—a person who was legally allowed to gamble at the age of 21. He further admitted to wagering over $1,000 while he was still under the legal gambling age of 21 in the state of Iowa. Williams celebrated his 21st birthday in June.

In a further revelation, Williams confessed to placing bets on college basketball games other than his own team’s, a violation that carries consequences under the NCAA’s new gambling rules. As a result, he is likely to face the loss of eligibility for half a season due to these rule violations.

Jeremiah Williams’ collegiate basketball journey began with two years at Temple before he transferred to Iowa State. Unfortunately, his time with the Cyclones was marred by a severe injury, as he tore his Achilles tendon in October. Consequently, earlier this year, he entered the transfer portal and is now continuing his collegiate basketball career at Rutgers.

However, Williams’s prospects for participating in the 2023-24 season hang in the balance due to NCAA regulations governing players who transfer multiple times. Despite his application for a waiver to allow his participation with the Scarlet Knights in the upcoming season, the NCAA has historically maintained strict enforcement of these rules, leaving uncertainty about whether Williams will receive the waiver.
