Michigan’s Kalel Mullings Emerges as Short-Yardage Superstar!

In an unexpected twist, Michigan football has discovered a surprising new star in their quest for dominance in short-yardage situations, Kalel Mullings.

Kalel Mullings, who was once a lesser-known third-string running back, has recently stolen the spotlight with his outstanding performances in the last two weeks, particularly during Michigan’s impressive 45-7 victory over Nebraska.

Mullings, with just five carries, managed to rack up an impressive career-high of 43 rushing yards. Notably, he pulled off a spectacular 20-yard touchdown run on a crucial third-and-1 play in the first quarter.

Lately, Mullings has become the go-to guy for those critical third-and-short situations. Standing at 6-foot-2 and weighing 239 pounds, he not only earned more playing time but also significantly lightened the workload for Corum and Edwards. In the previous game against Rutgers, he made a statement by gaining 40 yards from six carries, including an impressive 14-yard run. His success continued against the Cornhuskers, where he converted all four of his third-down opportunities.

Describing his approach to these high-pressure moments, Mullings shared, “Once you find that crease, just hitting hit as hard as you can, as fast as you can and keeping your pad level down. That’s all there really is to hit. Just taking that first read and go.”

During Michigan’s third drive of the game, Mullings demonstrated his effectiveness by gaining six crucial yards on a pair of third-and-short plays, keeping the drive alive and setting up J.J. McCarthy’s 21-yard touchdown run.

In the second half, Mullings was called upon again, this time gaining five yards on a third-and-4 play, which put Michigan in field-goal range early in the fourth quarter. In a final display of his abilities, Mullings picked up six crucial yards on fourth-and-1 at the Nebraska 27. These outstanding plays contributed to Michigan’s impressive 8-of-13 conversion rate on third downs, with Mullings emerging as a key factor in their success.

Traditionally, Michigan relied heavily on Corum in short-yardage situations. However, a new strategy from Harbaugh aimed at preserving Corum’s carries and maximizing his performance this season has shifted the responsibility to Mullings. This change aligns with Harbaugh’s history of using powerful running backs, including fullbacks, when they need just a yard or two.

Mullings’ remarkable performance may also remind fans of his two rushing touchdowns in the Big Ten championship against Purdue and another in the Fiesta Bowl against Texas Christian, although there was a fumble at the goal line in the latter game. Today, he stands tall, having outperformed Edwards, Michigan’s backup running back, over the last two weeks.

Speaking about his newfound role, Mullings expressed, “I’ve been feeling really comfortable running the football again. Just transitioning to full-time offense this offseason, I’ve been feeling more and more comfortable as time has gone on. Right now, I feel the most comfortable I’ve felt.”

Coach Harbaugh echoed his sentiments, saying, “I’m all about it. Saw it coming the last few weeks, and now it’s here. Bodes well for us.”

With Kalel Mullings emerging as Michigan’s secret weapon in short-yardage situations, fans have every reason to be excited about the team’s prospects this season. Mullings’ outstanding performances are bringing a new level of dynamism to Michigan’s offense.
