Iowa Football is known for its physicality and “defense wins championships” mentality. So, it comes as no surprise that Head Coach Kirk Ferentz taps into the state’s dominant wrestling scene for recruits.

“Great wrestlers aren’t always great football players, but rarely bad ones,” Ferentz said, highlighting the shared values of grit and strength.

This year, four 2024 recruits from Iowa’s wrestling state tournament showcase this philosophy.

  • Trent Cakerice: A two-star defensive lineman from Grundy Center, Cakerice brings wrestling’s strength and strategy to the gridiron. His 38-4 wrestling record translates to 56.5 tackles, 8 tackles for loss, and 7 sacks on the field.
  • Drew Campbell: This three-star defensive lineman from Cedar Falls credits wrestling for his football leverage and mental toughness. He translates his wrestling “never give up” attitude into 64.5 tackles, 21.5 tackles for loss, and 6 sacks last season.
  • Cody Fox: A four-star offensive lineman from East Buchanan, Fox’s wrestling background shines on both sides of the ball. He anchored the offensive line for a dominant rushing attack while recording 62.5 tackles, 9 tackles for loss, and 2 sacks on defense.
  • Mason Knipp: Despite being unranked, Columbus Catholic’s Knipp contributed to a 2,022-yard rushing attack and racked up 78 tackles, 36.5 tackles for loss, and 11 sacks, demonstrating the versatility wrestling fosters.

These recruits exemplify how Ferentz’s wrestling-inspired approach builds a team that thrives on “defense, toughness, and punting wins.” Their wrestling backgrounds translate to football skills, adding another layer to the Hawkeyes’ championship aspirations.
