Bellingham, Washington – A 17-year-old armed teen arrested at Bellingham High School graduation ceremony after engaging in a confrontation that involved making threats to shoot another student’s father, according to the police.
Amid the event, a Bellingham Police officer took swift action, tackling the boy just as he reached for a loaded 9mm semiautomatic pistol concealed in his waistband. Lt. Claudia Murphy provided details in an email statement to The Bellingham Herald, explaining that the firearm had slipped down to the boy’s knee from its original position in the waistband.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the incident. The identities of the boy and the victim were not disclosed, and it remains unclear whether the suspect was a student.
The 17-year-old was taken into custody and booked into juvenile detention on multiple charges, including felony harassment, unlawful possession of a firearm, possessing a weapon capable of causing harm, obstructing a law enforcement officer, and possessing a dangerous weapon on school premises.
The police shared an image of the seized pistol, a Polymer 80, equipped with a 16-round Glock magazine and loaded with 15 9mm cartridges.
The incident took place around 8:20 p.m. at Civic Stadium, following the culmination of four high school graduation ceremonies held throughout the day. The crowded courtyard in the Civic Athletic Complex on Lakeway Drive served as the location for the confrontation, according to Lt. Murphy.
