Washington, D.C. – Millions of student loan borrowers will see a temporary reprieve from payments as the Biden administration grapples with legal challenges to its student debt relief initiatives.
The Department of Education announced a pause on student loan payments and interest accrual for borrowers enrolled in the SAVE repayment plan. This decision comes after a federal appeals court blocked the implementation of the SAVE plan, which offers lower monthly payments and faster debt forgiveness for many borrowers. Approximately 8 million individuals were participating in the program.
Advocates for student loan borrowers had urged the administration to halt payments in light of the legal uncertainty, warning of potential chaos for borrowers. The Department of Education has pledged to provide regular updates to affected borrowers.
The latest legal setback is part of an ongoing battle over the Biden administration’s student debt relief policies. The Supreme Court previously struck down a plan to cancel up to $20,000 in student debt for millions of borrowers. The SAVE plan was introduced in response to that ruling.

The White House is also developing a new mass debt relief plan but faces obstacles in implementing it before the upcoming election.
