Women Who was Shot by Hamden Cop Awarded $1.1M Settlement

  • Local Cop Devin who fired 13 shots at the civic in some incidents dismissed as a cop and made to pay $1.1M to the lady who was injured.
  • The officer was made to perform community service of 150 hours and was released on the grounds of not continuing as cop again.

Women who was shot by Hamden Cop awarded $1.1M settlement. Former Hamden Police Officer Devin Eaton had shot and seriously injured a woman who filed a civil lawsuit and won $1.1 million as a settlement against the town as per New Haven Register. Stephanie Washington, the name of the injured woman had suffered severe pelvis and spine injuries back in 2019 because of the incident.

The New Haven Independent reported about the same and she filed a suit later against the town in 2020. Devin Eaton shot the lady while she was a passenger in a vehicle.

The amount of insurance to be provided accounted for $1.1 million approx. as per the insurance provider from Hamden. Washington’s claim against the town and Eaton has been denied by both the town and the officer but the claim has been resolved.

According to the Register, despite the fact that Hamden and the officer denied all liability they made the payment thus securing Washington’s claim. Eaton was arrested after an incident from April 2016 around 4:20 a.m. after the local police received a 911 call.

He was arrested by the Connecticut State Police in 2019 and was charged with first-degree assault. The incident that took place in April was about a newspaper delivery man being robbed by a red Honda Civic near the Hamden gas station on Arch Street.

After this incident, Eaton and Yale University officer Terrane Pollock reached the incident and also shot fired at the Civic and shot the passenger who suffered serious injuries during the incident. She was then taken to Yale-New Hospital for treatment for her injuries which weren’t life-threatening as per police.

Paul Witherspoon who was driving the vehicle was also questioned about the incident by the Hamden Police Department and he confirmed that he wasn’t injured in the shooting incident and that he as well as Washington was not found having a gun as per the attorney of the state.

Further, the investigation suggested that the shots were fired 13 times by Eaton in the civilian’s direction on Argyle Street as he fled. According to police, it was supposed to be a friendly fire and Pollock was another one who fired and secured a wound in the right calf due to the three fired shots.

Later he was also taken to the New Haven Hospital and was released the same day after treatment but was not charged in the incident.

After pleading guilty in January 2022, it was also found that Eaton was not “objectively reasonable” and unjustified. After being counted for a first-degree assault he was also sentenced to probation with no prison time for three years in last May.

He was also allowed to seek no prison time against the ability to be a cop again and was ordered to community service of 150 hours for three years.
