Lionel Messi turned on the magic for Inter Miami on Saturday night, leading them to a dominant 6-2 victory over the New York Red Bulls. In a record-breaking performance, Messi scored a goal and dished out a whopping five assists, rewriting the Major League Soccer record books.
This wasn’t just any win for Inter Miami. It marked their sixth consecutive victory, solidifying their position at the top of the Eastern Conference. The win came after a rough patch that included a 4-0 loss to the Red Bulls on April 20th, a game Messi missed due to injury.
The comeback started strong in the second half. Matias Rojas equalized with a shot assisted by Messi, and shortly after, Messi himself found the net with a goal from a Luis Suarez pass. The duo continued their dominance, with Messi assisting on both of Suarez’s three goals. Rojas even managed to squeeze in another goal with Messi’s help, making it a night to remember for the Miami attackers.

While the Red Bulls controlled possession initially and even scored first through Dante Vanzeir, they were powerless to stop the Messi-led offensive onslaught. Messi had a quieter first half with only one scoring chance saved by the New York goalkeeper.
This impressive performance adds to Messi’s growing list of accolades in MLS. He’s now the league leader in goals (tied with Suarez at 10) and has extended his streak of scoring and assisting to six consecutive games.
Both teams look to continue their campaigns next Saturday. Inter Miami travels to face CF Montreal, while the Red Bulls return home to host New England.
