Jarrett Guarantano, a former Denver Broncos backup quarterback, has been named the starter for the Houston Roughnecks in the newly formed United Football League (UFL), coach Curtis Johnson announced on Wednesday.

Guarantano, 26, played college ball at Tennessee and Washington State before joining the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Arizona Cardinals in 2022. After a brief stint on the Cardinals’ practice squad, he earned a spot on the Denver Broncos’ practice squad later that season. He even saw some action as a game-day backup in Week 15 before being released by the Broncos last summer. Guarantano then signed with the UFL’s Houston Roughnecks in December.

Guarantano isn’t the only ex-Broncos QB finding a shot in the UFL this spring. Case Cookus, who had a short stay with Denver in 2021, will suit up for the Memphis Showboats after bouncing around the NFL, CFL, and USFL. Meanwhile, former Broncos backups Paxton Lynch and Kyle Sloter remain unsigned after seeing XFL action last year.
