NASHVILLE – Jim Montgomery, head coach of the Boston Bruins, was honored with the prestigious Jack Adams Award as the NHL Coach of the Year during the 2023 NHL Awards held at Bridgestone Arena on Monday.
Taking over the reins on June 30, 2022, after succeeding Bruce Cassidy, Montgomery orchestrated a remarkable season for the Bruins, setting new NHL records with 65 wins and 135 points in a single campaign.
Boston’s outstanding performance earned them the Presidents’ Trophy, recognizing their status as the team with the best regular-season record (65-12-5).
Making history from the onset, Boston enjoyed an NHL-record 14-game home winning streak at the start of the season and boasted five separate winning streaks of at least seven games.
At 53 years old, Montgomery becomes the fifth coach in Bruins history to claim the Jack Adams Award and the first since Cassidy in 2019-20. The other finalists for the accolade were Dave Hakstol of the Seattle Kraken and Lindy Ruff of the New Jersey Devils.
The winner was determined by the votes of members of the NHL Broadcasters’ Association prior to the commencement of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

In addition to Montgomery’s recognition, the Bruins had further cause for celebration during the event. Star center Patrice Bergeron was honored with his sixth Selke Trophy as the league’s best defensive forward, while goaltender Linus Ullmark secured the Vezina Trophy as the top goalie, cementing the team’s exceptional achievements.
